During term one, all students, from years one to
seven, made puppets as part of our art program. This was in response to the
"Million Puppets Project" being run in Fremantle. 2008 was the first time that
the UNIMA (Union Internationale de la
Marionette) Congress was held in the Southern Hemisphere, it was based in
Fremantle. The West Australian Newspaper also ran a competition for puppets made
with 50% recycled newspaper. Koorana students managed to complete approximately
350 puppets which were sent off. One of our year two students received a family
pass to Aqua for her wonderful newspaper pirate puppet.
UNIMA is and international organisation bringing together people from all around
the world to contribute to the development of the art of puppetry. The project
seeks to embody the values of UNIMA - to use puppetry to promote human values of
peace and mutual understanding between peoples, regardless of race, political or
religious convictions and differences in culture.
In term two, year four and five students made kites, which were decorated in an
Asian style. Some students chose to include a rat in their design, as 2008 is
the Chinese year of the Rat. Year four students drew their own designs, and
traced them to form a symmetrical design, which was coloured with markers. Year
five students made Japanese style kites, they drew their own designs and painted
with Tempra paint.
